Destino, Sudáfrica. En la puerta de embarque para Johannesburgo se respira ya ambiente futbolero, aunque estemos a dos semanas del arranque del Mundial 2010. Los jugadores de la selección de Guatemala, vestidos con chándal oficial, intentan matar las horas de espera tumbados en el suelo de Barajas, riendo y contando chistes. Guatemala no jugará el Mundial, pero ha sido convocada por la FIFA para un amistoso con la selección de Sudáfrica (se jugará el lunes 31 en Ciudad del Cabo).
En el avión han puesto Invictus, de Clint Eastwood. Morgan Freeman interpretando a Nelson Mandela en el estadio Ellis Park ha sido la última imagen borrosa que recuerdo antes de caer rendido. Me ha despertado el golpe brusco del tren de aterrizaje sobre la pista de Johannesburgo.
En el aeropuerto internacional Tambo, bajo un balón de fútbol gigantesco que cuelga del techo del hall principal, nos esperaba Brendon, nuestro chófer afrikáner. Prefiere el rugby al fútbol, como buen bóer. Recordando el libro de John Carlin y la imagen de Invictus, le hemos pedido a Brendon que nos lleve a Ellis Park. Todo un símbolo de la Sudáfrica actual. Fue allá donde los Springboks derrotaron a los All Blacks neozelandeses ante miles de personas que, en presencia del primer presidente negro de Sudáfrica, celebraban la victoria de un país que empezaba a cambiar.
Hemos descubierto no sin cierta decepción que Ellis Park ha sido rebautizado con el nombre de Coca-Cola Park (algo así como el Sadar a.k.a Reyno de Navarra).
Si ya de por si, estos eventos suelen ser deficitarios, en Sudafrica…. Tengo la sensación que, infraestructuras nuevas a parte, es un flaco favor para el país.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea
shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and
screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
