Visita a Fibertecnic

On December 16 the chassis group of Formula Student Bizkaia visited Fibertecnic.

We looked for their assistance due to the fact that they manufacture aviation components and use similar materials to those of the FSB2015´s monocoque.

Initially, the chassis group had a meeting with four engineers who have broad knowledge of composite materials and, after showing them the design of the monocoque and the manufacturing plan, they gave us their opinions and alternatives to simplify the manufacturing process. With all the valuable information we gathered, the best choice for monocoque manufacture will be chosen.

After that, we were invited to a tour through the factory, which was really helpful in order to understand and clarify the discussed issues.

We want to thank Fibertecnic for their cooperation and assistance to the FSB team, as well as for the great treatment we received during the visit.

Last week the quasi-static test of the Impact Attenuator was performed. Due to the great leap forward that the team will make this year, changing from a tubular chassis to a carbon fiber monocoque, this test was critic. The reason is that the joint is different from the one of the last year.

The Impact Attenuator of the FSB2014 was made of foam, since it absorbs a great amount of energy and all the received efforts are evenly distributed through the base, through the anti-intrusion plate. This plate was made of 1.5 mm steel and was welded to the front of the chassis.

In the FSB2015 we have selected an aluminum honeycomb Impact Attenuator, because it absorbs more energy and it is lighter than the foam. However, as a disadvantage we can underline that it transmits forces through a lower section since its base is smaller. That is, the plate is bigger than the base, reason why we could not use it last year. Regarding the anti-intrusion plate of this year, it will be made with a 4 mm thick aluminum, as it will be bolted to the front of the monocoque, has a greater flexural stiffness and is a little bit lighter than the steel.

The quasi-static test went as planned. We analyzed the behavior of the material, the energy absorbed by the deformation and the tension at which it begins to compress. We also studied the behavior of the anti-intrusion plate and we got very positive results regarding the dynamic test. The Impact Attenuator was deformed plastically, but the plate deformed elastically, and after removing the load it recovered its natural shape.

Therefore, the next step is the dynamic test and the verification that the anti-intrusion plate will not be permanently deformed more than 25.4 mm after the impact of 300kg to 7m/s.

On Saturday December 6th we performed the second dynamic test of the 2015 season in the facilities provided by Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC).

Once all the assembly and the needed verifications were made in the FSB2014, we began with the tests. In this occasion, the tests were focused on verifying the correct performance of the nozzles. We confirmed our initial hypothesis and found that the results with and without nozzles were aligned with the ones expected. Hence, the nozzles will probably be an important part of our FSB2015 when brakes refrigeration are needed.

At the end of the scheduled tests we still had energy in the batteries, so we decided to perform acceleration tests. This test is performed in the competitions and the pilots have to train in order to achieve the optimum performance. However, the temperature of the track was well below the usual. This condition gave results that were not truthful, but despite this, the pilots noted that these difficult conditions helped them to get an idea of the car’s real performance when tires and track are cold.

Prestik 14

During 25 and 26 of November the Prestik 14, youth employment fair took place. The main objective of this event was to establish a meeting point between enterprises, training centres and public bodies, so that they could establish closer relationships guiding them in their future careers. To do this, the companies, training centres… showed their employment and entrepreneurship programmes.

In this edition the fair´s goal was to boost job offers, as well as creativity and technology. So there were guidance tables to advise the new entrepreneurs, technology classrooms, tests to challenge creativity through the new technologies or robotics, etc.

Our team, Formula Student Bizkaia, was representing the University of the Basque Country UPV / EHU with the FSB2014. In our stand we explained our project to the attendants and challenged the visitors to use our already famous FSB race simulator.

Monocasco FSB2015

This year’s biggest revolution is focused on the chassis, the car’s main structure, due to the new incorporation of the carbon fiber, a material reserved for extremely demanding applications and with a really high price. In previous seasons, we had always used a tubular steel chassis, adapted to the rules. With this guidelines we have tried to optimize it a little bit every year, but we have reached a turning point, since right now is really difficult to reduce the weight without compromising the torsional stiffness. This problem forced us to change to the carbon fiber.

In one hand, this material has a greater stiffness/weight ratio than steel, but it has a higher cost and it is a much more complex material. This is because the carbon fiber is an orthotropic material unlike conventional materials and steels that are isotropic. That means that their properties vary along with the direction and their main directions are symmetrical. In our case, as we will use bidirectional fabric, the properties will be maximized in two directions. So the layers should be oriented properly in order to be able to supports all the loads that come from the suspension, powertrain… without compromising its integrity. These fibers will be used as prepreg cloth, this means that the tissues are inside a viscous mixture of resin and catalyst. After putting various layers on the chassis and heating the mold in the oven, the resin will cure, and we will have the desired shape made with prepreg.

In addition, to further optimize the stiffness/weight ratio, we will use what is known as carbon fiber sandwich panel. In short, it is conformed by two carbon fiber sheets with a light inside core, which in our case will be an aramid panel shaped as honeycomb. The whole structure will be glued with a high performance adhesive.

All this allows us to reduce the weight of the chassis a 30% and with about 3 times its torsional rigidity. So the FSB2015 have a better dynamic performance on the track.

On Saturday, November 22, the Formula Student Bizkaia team carried out the first car tests of the season with the presence of the new members. They took place in the installatios of Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC).

The first tests were carried out by the R&D group. They tested the new slip control algorithms and the automated speed control system after the Control & Telemetry group had checked the car.

Afterwards Suspension & Steering group had the chance of changing the rear springs and test the performance and effect of the springs in vehicle dynamics.

Corners group had also the opportunity of performing different tests, being the most important the measurement of the brakes’ temperature using the newly developed cooling nozzles

After all the needed tests were made and some problems were solved, we obtained really important data for the improvement and validation of our designs.
