Monocasco FSB2015

This year’s biggest revolution is focused on the chassis, the car’s main structure, due to the new incorporation of the carbon fiber, a material reserved for extremely demanding applications and with a really high price. In previous seasons, we had always used a tubular steel chassis, adapted to the rules. With this guidelines we have tried to optimize it a little bit every year, but we have reached a turning point, since right now is really difficult to reduce the weight without compromising the torsional stiffness. This problem forced us to change to the carbon fiber.

In one hand, this material has a greater stiffness/weight ratio than steel, but it has a higher cost and it is a much more complex material. This is because the carbon fiber is an orthotropic material unlike conventional materials and steels that are isotropic. That means that their properties vary along with the direction and their main directions are symmetrical. In our case, as we will use bidirectional fabric, the properties will be maximized in two directions. So the layers should be oriented properly in order to be able to supports all the loads that come from the suspension, powertrain… without compromising its integrity. These fibers will be used as prepreg cloth, this means that the tissues are inside a viscous mixture of resin and catalyst. After putting various layers on the chassis and heating the mold in the oven, the resin will cure, and we will have the desired shape made with prepreg.

In addition, to further optimize the stiffness/weight ratio, we will use what is known as carbon fiber sandwich panel. In short, it is conformed by two carbon fiber sheets with a light inside core, which in our case will be an aramid panel shaped as honeycomb. The whole structure will be glued with a high performance adhesive.

All this allows us to reduce the weight of the chassis a 30% and with about 3 times its torsional rigidity. So the FSB2015 have a better dynamic performance on the track.
